ok, ok .. so u missed the most important band performing and say that the show sucked ... how can u say a show is shit when u didn't see the whole show? if it was just some band u missed .. sure ... but because u missed an award winning band ... the band who won first place ... the most imortant band that night ... its like saying woodstock was crap, but u missed the who .... how bout u see the show before judging it ... or at least seeing the band who came in 1st ... one of the non-screamo bands who made u want to watch ... stomp ur feet or just dance around like an idiot ... because u can actually get something out of the one band u missed ... so on a higher note ... got grapes?

The Playmusic Festival was my first assignment with Supernova. I had a lot of fun that day, got to know my co-workers a little more and watched everyone freeze their ass off while I was only wearing a t-shirt (must be those cold Saskatchewan winters that built of my cold threshold). That might not be entirely true cuz as soon as the sun went down I was shivering. But here is my review of the show;

LIMEBOX: I saw a lot of potential in this band. They definitely need to practice more and the singer needs to work on his range, but there was something that grabbed me. Maybe it was the whaling blues licks the lead guitarist played at the beginning of the set.

THE DAMN DIRTY GRAPES: I missed these guys set due to a supper break. I did go to their page though to see what I missed. I didn’t mind the song I heard so much. It had a real Sabbathy type riff. I can’t tell if there any good from just hearing one song but I am sorry I missed there set.

THE BASIS: These guys were technically better then a lot of the band I saw that day. They were still pretty average though. The singer/guitarist had a couple nice guitar soloes but they were just your average hard rock band. Nothing great but nothing terrible either.They need to find their own thing, maybe they should start listening to jazz, I don’t know.

SAINT ALVIA CARTEL: I try to be open to all music but I just couldn’t get into these guys. Maybe it was the U2 influence I heard in their music. The singer and I had a moment though, he was talking about Black Flag and showed off his Flag logo tattoo on his arm. I went up to the stage and showed off mine which was followed by respect knuckles between the singer and I.

All in all it was a fun time. The bands weren’t very good and the weather was cold but my co-workers made it warm.

As for the rest of the bands, ive dont alot of thinking on what to say about them. So here it goes; I know all the bands are pretty much straight out of the garage. They have some growing as a band to get through; finding their sound, maybe replacing members and all that. But what I did see from some of these bands is that they were heading down a path of mediocre music. The screamo, pop-punk and pop-rock bands sounded like every other screamo band, unsigned or signed. There using the same formula of the same riffs, same style of singing, drumming, bass and even stage moves. What makes a great band, and by great I don't mean successful, is they stood apart from the rest. I've give you some examples:

The 70's arena rock bands were rock with a heavy foundation in blues but the great bands took more influence. Alot of these bands were great and successful but what made them great was the range of influences. Led Zeppelin was very deep rooted in early American blues but with songs like Kashmir, Tangerine and Trampled Underfoor you heard middle eastern, folk and funk influence. The great Thin Lizzy not only used twin lead guitars but used there Irish folk roots to create a truly original sound. Black Sabbath took the idea of making scary music to create an entire genre but if you listen to their early years you can hear blues, jazz, folk. You can also take the great bands that flew under the radar like Sir Lord Baltimore that can't really be described you just have to listen to it. There's also the JPT Scare Band who have my favourite psychadelic blues jam of all time "Sleeping Sickness." Both bands did their own thing Sir Lord Baltimore did something completely unique and JPT just took a simple form or rock and blues and made it there own.

The hardcore punk scene has a suprizing number of influences. Black Flag were big bands of John Coltrane, Curtis Mayfield and Black Sabbath. Dead Kennedy's fuzed jazz, surf music and punk to create something no band can even come close to sounding like. As well as the bands mentioned above other bands like the Minute Men and The Damned took punk into another direction different from the status quo of punk which in itself was against the status quo.

To give some examples of modern bands theirs Clutch. Listen to their music and you can here Chicago and Delta blues and Lousiana Funk ex. The Meters, to create a sound of their own. Another example is Eric Sardinas. All he did was take delta blues and gave it a modern twist.

What I'm trying to get at here is that alot bands in the underground and mainstream that have completely forgot the roots of the music. They have all went backwards. The music has gotten simple but its gone back to the basics. The riffs are what you would play if you were just starting to play guitar. With that there is no real style to be made. Theres no chance of any band creating their own genre anymore. Everythings been done, but that doesnt mean you can't take influence from other genres. All the bands that sound the same within their genre are taking influence from the same bands as everyone else. Shitty bands like Creed and Godsmack are complete rip offs of Alice In Chains. Theres no influence really beyond that, like the bands that Alice in Chains listened to. The great bands took influence within their genre and expanded to the core of other genres. I'm very suprized I havent heard blues and jazz in screamo. Music that is so person to people you would think they would jump all over it. I guess it goes down to bands dont want to spend time to learn their instruments. If they can get by with average they'll take it. I guess that's why music has been on a downfall. It doesnt matter if you can play anymore just a matter if someone can make money off it.

Another Julie Comment!

Ok so despite that I definatly shoulda worn everything i own to keep warm at this show, the music was pretty kick ass! I loved YLR the best this time, big thumbs up for peanut butter jelly time! totally made my day!

I also liked how even though there were times where the crowd got thinner, it didn't get any less tame.

Ok so onto the bands! I'm not sure if there was one that I really didn't like. Everyone interacted well with the crowd and got everyone moving which i really enjoy seeing. Big ups to Limebox on your girl drummer (sorry i don't know your name) but you were totally awesome! I'm really sorry that I missed some of the bands sets to warm up but i made sure to stick around for at least half and I must say i'm very impressed with all of you! Braving the cold in your t-shirts and what not. I also really enjoyed the Saint Alvia Cartel! Kudos on the Black Flag cover! I think the only bad part of the show was that i stepped in mud with my white shoes:( bad idea on my behalf.

Thanks to everyone who let me take their pictures! I had a great time and loved all the group poses! See you all next time!
