Kicked Off the Farm is an aggressive alternative rock band, assembled in Vancouver, B.C., with players from across Canada. The band formed in early 2009, when Ontario-born friends Curtis Wilson and Matthew MacMartin connected with Nova Scotia export Dayna Van Buskirk and B.C.’s own Sam Gent on a farm in the Vancouver suburb of Langley.
Fueled by a shared & weathered desire to join the evolving conversation that is alternative rock, armed with recent knowledge of how to compose music, and informed by a lifetime of experience and experimentation, they each set aside the subdued alter egos created to accommodate the real world and allowed the once-suppressed voices in their head to form a band.
That experiment proved to be a cure for apathy; a vaccine against melancholy. Thoughts and sounds came together quickly, reproduced and evolved organically, with all the immediacy and candor of great garage rock. The result: a primal, visceral sound; a narrative that simultaneously embraces honesty and hyperbole.
As is often the end of a chapter in any garage band story, complaints about the noise and indulgences of the band culminated in the inevitable. Fortunately, just as quickly as they were kicked off the farm, the band was embraced by the stage.
The decidedly grunge-rock vibe that permeates the band’s sound is authentic and almost fated. Children of the nineties, they proudly wear their influences on their occasionally plaid sleeves. It’s not homage, nor an attempt to subvert the genre, but a genuine response to the music that inspired them to think outside the box and beyond the herd; an effort to pay it forward.
Like the best examples of the genre, as a progression of it, Kicked Off the Farm is more than simply heavy guitar distortion and angst-ridden lyrics. With an ever expanding stock of influences, new and old, friends and foreign talent alike, the music continues to deliver the punk-rock and metal influenced riffs and rhythms signature to its breed, but surprises with layers and twists, subtle and overt; variety when you least expect it, but need it the most – a compliment to any style.
With relentless intensity, the unrestrained instruments embrace and embellish lyrical tones both sincere and sarcastic, making it a mission for the listener to decipher the message or meaning in any given song. But that’s what separates alternative rock from pop music; the former assumes and encourages a desire not just to be entertained, but to participate.
Kicked Off the Farm demands attention; appreciates it – and rewards it.
